Aquaman outfit in the standard Ideal
costume box. Aquaman was first issued in 1966 as part of the
original line of Captain Action accessories, and was later reissued in
a ring box starting in 1967. The accessories include a Suit, Face
Mask, Fins, Belt with Knife Sheath, Conch Horn, Swordfish Sword, Trident,
and Knife. Scans of this box are available here: Aquaman
Boxart.

Aquaman Outfit in ring box.
Same stuff, different box. As you can see in the lower right hand
portion of the box the arrow proclaims "Its New! For you" an interesting
promotional item that was introduced with the second series of costumes.

Aquman Flicker Ring. The ring
features a picture of Captain Action, and then when viewed from a slightly
different angle, a picture of Aquaman. The ring inserts were made
by Vari View, and had a sliver plastic base. The inserts were later
available in larger blue bases and were sold in gum ball machines.

Captain Action Aquaman bodysuit and
Face Mask, on costume dummy. The suit has an Orange top with
a sparkled criss cross pattern on it, black shorts and green legs.
The sheen on the top is really nice, boxed and mint examples look great,
this picture does not do it justice.

Aquaman's Face Mask. This is
the original "white lipped" version, which has white hair. The Second
issue masks had pink lips and yellow hair, making them easily confused
with Flash Gordon's face mask.

 |
Aquaman's mask, pink lipped version.
As you can see it has yellow hair, and yellowish eyebrows.
I have been told that there is a third variation, one with white lips and
eyebrows, and yellow painted over the white hair. So there you have
it, the many faces of Aquaman.

 |
Aquaman's Fins. Yellow rubber
with green paint. Both fins are interchangeable, there is no right
or left one. Being that they are made of rubber they tend to shrink
with age and can be tough to get onto a figure. He looks fine without
them, since their bright yellow color makes him look like a colorblind
frog man.

|
Aquaman's Belt with Knife Sheath.
They neglected to mention that it also has a loop for his Swordfish Sword
(no, its not for his trident, if you don't believe me try it). Yellow
rubber with green painted accents. Very cool "A" logo on the buckle
and sheath. The knife tends to melt when kept in the sheath and once
its stuck in there is a real piece of work to remove. Even if you
do remove the knife, the blade tends to loose its shape and looks more
like a spatula. Hardly much of an offensive weapon at that point.
|
 |
Aquaman's Trident. Yellow plastic
with silver painted pitchfork at the end. This is a very fragile
piece and it is rare to come across one which has never been broken.
Handle with care. I can't tell you how many times I have run across
just the top half, and it just doesn't look right without that long handle.
|
 |
Aquaman's Swordfish Sword. Yellow
plastic, painted blue with a red painted end. Yes, its yellow plastic,
I have seen melted ones and confirmed it. It has a swordfish face
embossed on the guard. The long thin tip would probably never fly
with modern toy safety standards.
|
 |
Aquaman's Conch Horn. Pink rubber,
painted white. Although it appears to be an accessory bag, it was
designed to be a horn for him to use to call his allies, or perhaps warn
his prey. Its not going to do him much good under water, as sound
does not propogate well through that medium. So what goes inside
of it? Scungille.
|
 |
Aquaman's Knife. Yellow plastic
with silver painted blade and green accents on the handle. Often
found stuck in the sheath. So often in fact, that I couldn't get
it out of there to take a picture of it. So here is a pathetic picture
of one on a card. The knife is very intricately designed, with a
swirl on the handle and a scalloped blade.
